Corn Facts

The following graphs were created using data from the National Agricultrual Statistics Service. I have used them in various presentations and papers that have been or will be published.

Below is a graph of U. S. maize yields from 1866 to 1996. The regression lines were splined together at roughly the years in which there were major shifts in cultivar types. From 1866 to 1930, predominantly open-pollinated cultivars were grown. From 1930 to 1960, predominantly double-cross hybrids were grown. And from 1960 to present, predominantly single cross hybrids were grown. The b-values are the slopes of the lines in bushels/acre/year. For example, since 1930 maize yields have been increasing at an average rate of 2.06 bushels per acre per year.

The graph below contains the U. S. Corn area harvested from 1866 to 1996. I changed the units on you. This graph is plotted in Millions of hectares. There are 2.471 acres in a hectare

More graphs will follow as I get a chance to put them on the web page
